A Rose That Grew In The Desert

I found a rose that grew in the desert--
but she was not the desert rose,
the succulent adenium;
I found a rosa, and she bloomed
in the desert.

oh, she was magnificent--
her petals, blood red; her thorns
I called 'diamonds in the rough'.
she grew tall and swayed defiant.

my human nature so tempted me
to bring her home--
but my rose was too deeply rooted.

I fell in love with a rose that grew
in the desert--
and never stopped to think how
miraculous that could be.

I stayed with her for as long as
I could--
gave her water, and spoke of
sunlight; caressed her petals
and brought her shade--
but I could not grow in the desert.

I found a rose that grew in the desert--
and there she remains--
to grow wild in the desert.

I often hope she consumes the sands,
and spreads across the earth; a jungle
of roses.

oh, how I long for that--
to one day be reunited with the rose
that grew in the desert.
